January 2003 Master Plan Symposium Participants

Ed Blake , Landscape Architect for The Lake Terrace Convention Center and the Crosby Arboretum, Picayune, MS. Principal of the Landscape Studio, Hattiesburg, MS. Ed is a forerunner of sustainable landscape design in the South and has worked on master planning for the University of Southern Mississippi and the Crosby Arboretum.

Curt Burnette , Naturalist, Director of Louisiana Nature Center , NOLA. Curt was the founding Director of the Audubon Institute Species Survival Center , next door to A Studio in the Woods (ASITW), and is very knowledgeable about the plant and animal species in the area.

John Clark, PhD , Professor of Philosophy and Chair of Environmental Studies Program, Loyola University , NOLA. John is a member of ASITW advisory board and very interested in how our philosophical view of the environment, the arts, and conservation will affect and be effected by the design process.

James Hubbell , Architect, Hubbell and Hubbell, San Diego , California . James creates places that heal the soul and renew the spirit through organic design solutions. He is committed to exploring form, matter, light and shadow at building sites, then incorporating the play of these elements into each unique piece of architecture and art he creates. He is equally committed to developing ecologically sound building practices that support sustainable ways of living.

MaPo Kinnord-Payton , Ceramicist and Professor, Xavier University , NOLA. MaPo is a member of the ASITW Board and is interested in low-cost, organic building techniques and has studied clay building in America and Ghana .

Barry Kohl, PhD, Geologist, Adjunct Professor of Geology at Tulane University , NOLA. Barry has done considerable research on the natural geology in the area and has led numerous nature walks at ASITW. He is currently president of the Louisiana Audubon Council and Conservation Chair of the New Orleans ' Group of the Sierra Club. 

E. Eean McNaughton , Principal,Eean McNaughton Architects, and Adjunct Professor, Tulane University School of Architecture. Designer of the Louisiana Nature and Science Center , New Orleans , and the Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab, AL. Eean has taught classes in site design and design studios in low-cost sustainable housing. Eean will use ASITW as a model for his design students.

Martha Jane Murray, Architect, Little Rock , AK . Martha Jane is a LEED (Leadership in Environmental Excellence in Design) certified architect interested in sustainable design. She has been a teacher at Tulane University School of Architecture

Walter Payton, Musician, Composer, and long-time music teacher in the NOLA public school system. Walter has taught many of the now well-recognized New Orleans musicians, including his son, Nicholas Payton. Walter has always been interested in the art of composing music and been a supporter of ASITW for years.

Peter Richards, Chair, Board of Trustees for the Alliance of Artists’ Communities and Senior Artist at the Exploratorium in San Francisco , CA. Peter brings his experience with artists’ communities as well as his experience as an artist.

Robert Tannen, nationally recognized artist and city planner, NOLA. Robert is the moderator for the Public Forum and participated in the symposium work sessions.

Rural Studio, a division of Auburn University School of Architecture, AL. The Rural Studio has involved students in real life low-cost, innovative, and sustainable design solutions for the lower-income community of rural Alabama . Participating Rural Studio members include Andrew Freear, Co-Director and Professor; Jay Sanders, Professor; and Jennifer Bonner, Clerk-of-the-Works.

Daniel Winkert , Architect and Principal of NewERA Architecture, NOLA. Wink is committed to establishing environmentally responsible architecture in New Orleans , and has served on the ASITW Advisory Board. Wink is acting as Program Director for the Conference and was the Architect-in-Residence following the conference. During his residency Wink compiled and assimilated the work of the weekend planning charette into the final Mater Plan document.

Doug Winn , Architect of Acadiana Park Nature Station, Lafayette , LA. Co-author of Natural Louisiana Architecture, Doug’s commitment to sustainable design is strong and established.
