Artists' residencies, open to literary , visual and performing artists are the heart of our program at A Studio in the Woods and provide a rare opportunity, the gift of time, space and supportive surroundings in which to experiment and take creative leaps. That creative leap can result in the great art that allows humankind to extend our vision, awareness and understanding.
A regular residency is two to four weeks during which time the artist lives on site, is provided with a private studio, meals and uninterrupted work time for a small fee to cover food costs. Shorter residencies of one day to a week or more are possible and happen throughout the year on an informal basis.
We also offer special thematic residencies that often provide the artist with a stipend and/or supply and travel costs. These residencies are at least four weeks long and require that the artist create work reflecting a theme, such as River Residencies examining the Mississippi River .
Residencies at ASITW Applications will be reviewed on the basis of:
• Seriousness of purpose
• Harmony with ASITW mission
• Creative use of the time, space and environment provided
• Quality of proposal
People have been gravitating to ASITW for inspiration ever since artists and environmental stewards Lucianne and Joe Carmichael discovered the place in 1969. This unique and rustic retreat center has been providing artist residencies, both official and ad-hoc, that seek to create work inspired by and contributing to appreciation of the natural environment. Our programming also includes symposia and workshops for artists, young people and the community-at-large in the arts, environment and the connection between the two.
Evolving Residencies
ASITW, member of the Alliance of Artists' Communities, is a growing artists community that received its nonprofit status in June 2002 and became a part of Tulane University in 2004. We consider ourselves to be continually in the learning process about what makes a successful residency. Continued feedback from residencies helps us better serve artists and create new programming. It is expected that by 2008, ASITW will be able to accommodate three artists at a time with private cabins and studio spaces. At present only one artist is being accommodated.
Eligibility
VISUAL ARTISTS, PERFORMANCE ARTISTS, COMPOSERS, LITERARY ARTISTS (students are not eligible)
Environment/Facilities
A Studio in the Woods , located on the Mississippi River bank within the city limits of New Orleans, is the homestead of artist/founders Lucianne and Joe Carmichael. Now a part of Tulane University, the Carmichaels continue to reside on-site and serve as stewards to the land and the artists who spend time here. It is located on bottomland hardwood forest that was clear-cut in the late 1700s to make way for a sugar cane plantation. One of the few remaining pieces of forest in the area, it is lush, precious and endangered. With the Studio’s' attention to environmental stewardship, the land is reclaiming itself to its original pristine state. Please note that ASITW is located in a semi-tropical environment, and in the spring, temperatures range from 59 - 89 degrees with humidity levels upwards of 75%. Spring is an incredibly beautiful time in the woods though rain and mosquitoes can be plentiful this time of year! There is no public transportation so artists must arrange for their own if they need to be mobile. We are 8 miles from the nearest grocery/ pharmacy.
Housing/Meals
Housing/Services: The artists' guest room with private entry and bath is located on the ground floor of the Carmichael 's rustic home created from recycled materials. There is air-conditioning in this sleeping area but not in the other family living spaces. Meals: Residents have access to the kitchen shared with the Carmichaels . Evening meals are provided by ASITW. Residents are expected to prepare their own breakfast and lunch. ASITW staff will keep food stocked for artists. Dinners can be planned with invited guests from the cultural community of New Orleans (residents will be polled about how many community dinners they would like during their residency and who they would like to meet).
Studio/Work Facilities
There is private studio (approximately 185 square feet) available to visual artists, composers and literary artists, furnished with a writing desk, a large easel, much wall space and a beautiful view of the pond and surrounding woods. This building is also air-conditioned but has no separate phone line. Access to the phone/internet is available in the project office space and therefore limited to off hours. There is a meadow and wooded land on the property available for outdoor installations, performances, or workspace. Nearby there are also many miles of public land on the Mississippi River levee and batture which are potential source of river inspired creativity.
Financial Support
A fee of $20/day is typically charged to partially absorb the cost of food, living and studio space. (Unless accepted to a special themed residency with stipend). ASITW covers all additional costs with the exception of: personal living expenses, materials and supplies, telephone charges, and any other expenses relating to the cost of producing work the artist-in-residence may incur while in the program. Travel and shipping expenses to and from ASITW are also the responsibility of the artist.
